Mid-Summer Updates: New Community Controllers, New Features and New Promises
Updates on MIDI Designer Pro X, the last remaining survivor of the iPad MIDI wars of the last decade. Now free to download for iPad, iPhone and Mac.
Community Updates
We’ve had many amazing new shares since our last newsletter. Some, like this Gold-rated controller for Gig Performer by Richard Haley, redefines what’s possible with UX in MIDI Designer, even predate our last newsletter.
Since then, the high-end Chase Bliss effects pedals have continued to advance, led by the fearless Yas. His clean aesthetics, complete layouts, and incredible explanatory videos keep amazing us (we've heard that Chase Bliss is extremely impressed too). The Gold-Rated Chase Bliss Blooper Layout is brilliant and beautiful, but the Onward layout takes the prize for speed and quality, having shipped in June (and the layout came out in June). Rumor has it Yas had most of the layout ready and needed only to test, fix, and start demoing, which is more than most of us accomplish in a year. Check the video on MIDI Control Demo & Setup:
Then we have this layout for the OSCar with a user video by veteran qdrtshlz. It’s a small layout but packs a wallop.
Then we’ve got two very interesting layouts, both working with the concept of mixers.
The first layout by new arrival Fremdton mimics the Akai MIDImix and allows MIDI Designer to work with scripts from Ableton for the Akai MIDI and possibly the Novation LaunchControl XL. We’ll need to do some videos using this very soon:
And the last layout we’ll mention for now is the brilliant, beautiful, Gold-rated 'Mickie' MCU-compatible control surface with colour (sic) strips by the Elf. This is phenomenal because the maker of Mickie (pronounced Mack-eeee) has spent considerable amounts of resources to make this standard impossibly closed. This is not the first Mickie layout for MD, but it’s definitely the most fully-featured and best looking. It’s amazing.
We cannot express sufficient gratitude and awe for our amazing Community and how you continue to forge new directions. We’re so excited to see what comes in next.
Sysex Strings
The next layout — yet another by Veteran Elite Master Kenyon (jkhiser) — shows our new feature, Sysex Strings, in full effect. The trick here is that he designed the feature from the ground up and convinced us to implement it. This feature will make communicating strings over Sysex a breeze for future layouts.
Here’s the teaser and here’s the layout. Brilliant.
Phuture Physics: Bouncing Balls
We’ve made a soft promise to honor our fallen comrade MidiMe by integrating its functionality this fall. Along with our Ableton Link Loopers, this new feature will give us some of the performance functionality that MD has always yearned for.
